Almost the entire Ombú oil block, operated by Emerald Energy, overlaps Colombia’s Macarena Special Management Area, created to conserve connectivity between the Andean, Amazon and Orinoquía natural regions. The project, now suspended after social protests, exposes the tensions caused by hydrocarbon extraction in protected areas without clear regulations.

This investigation reveals that Eneva, Brazil’s largest private gas company, has been authorized to drill the only active oil and gas block overlapping an Indigenous territory in the Brazilian Legal Amazon. Over 75% of the Krenyê Indigenous Land, in the state of Maranhão, overlaps a block granted for fossil fuel exploration, where drilling could begin in 2026, despite constitutional protections that prohibit fossil fuel exploration on Indigenous lands. Framed as part of the energy transition, the expansion of the Parnaíba Thermoelectric Complex relies on liquefied natural gas production and on turning one of Brazil’s main agribusiness frontiers into a logistics corridor for gas and grains, impacting quilombola territories and other protected areas.
